Let me start by saying the only thing I enjoy about Halloween is the candy. It’s just not one of my favorite holidays it never has been. My kids love it but I’m pretty sure all kids love Halloween. Even if you love or hate Halloween I’m sure you’ll still have candy. And if your like me and on a health journey the candy could become a problem.
Let’s talk about a few ways to save yourself from hiding in the bathroom and finishing off your kids bucket of Halloween candy. You can thank me later!
What To Do When You Have Leftover Halloween Candy
After Halloween is over you’ll probably have some leftover candy from handing it out your to neighborhood kids. Especially this year, not knowing how many people will actually go trick-or-treating.
If you do take your kids trick-or-treating you’ll most likely have candy leftover from your kids trick-or-treat bags. To avoid eating it all yourself, follow these tips for easy ways to get rid of the candy.
Save it For the Next Holiday
One way you can get rid of your Halloween candy is by saving it for the next holiday. There are a lot of different types of candy that’s given out or purchased during this holiday that isn’t necessarily themed specifically for Halloween.
For example, your kids might have been given quite a few of the bite-sized chocolate candies, but they don’t have ghosts or pumpkins printed on them. You can easily put these away and save them to put out during Thanksgiving as a little treat or put them in your kid’s Christmas stockings.
Only save the candy this way if you have self-control. If you don’t you’ll end up like me and eat it all after your kids have gone to bed. You know, sitting on the couch watching Netflix praying that you don’t wake your kids up by opening all those candy wrappers. We all know kids hear everything…On top of that, I’m pretty sure they can sniff candy out from 10 miles away in a dead sleep!
Find Another Use For it
If you don’t want to save the candy or some of it is themed to Halloween, then you can try to find another use for it right now. Sure, you might not want to sit there and eat all the candy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make treats that others might enjoy.
You can melt the chocolate to add a little flavoring to your coffee in the morning or you can crush candy to make ice cream toppings. This allows you to use the candy for a treat, but not completely overindulge and eat it all in a short period of time.
You can also melt the chocolate down and add to cute candy molds then freeze for Thanksgiving or Christmas. This is a super cute and fun thing to do plus you can have the kids take part in this!
Get Involved in a Buy-Back Program
Believe it or not, there are buyback programs for all that candy! These programs are often available in the holidays between Halloween and Christmas. The programs are meant to send the candy to people in need, like children that don’t get treats or to programs like Operation Gratitude, which sends gifts to military members that are overseas.
Not only are you getting rid of the candy, but you might even make a little money back for it. My kid’s dentist also takes the candy in trade. You aren’t making money this way but your defiantly saving in the cavity club! I’d much rather save my money at the dentist than anything else.
Use the Candy For Decorations
You could also consider whether or not your Halloween candy can be used for decorations in some way. You can take apart the M&M bags of candy, put the candy in mason jars, then save it for next Halloween or even Thanksgiving of this year. The colors of Halloween M&Ms are usually yellow, orange and red, so they work great for all the fall seasons. Putting these candies in jars provide a simple and inexpensive decor option.
We use M&M’s for all holidays. We make different treats with them. So when you separate the colors it makes it easier when you go to grab them for the next holiday. We love to make reindeer food with the M&M’s and just set them out to snack on through out the holidays. Everyone’s elf on the shelf loves M&M’s too right?
There are so many options when you don’t want to keep or see the candy hanging around, you can get very creative in how you decide to remove this yummy poison from your house. Remember that there will be plenty of time for extra treats the next few months with the start of the Holiday season and the last thing you need is to binge the Halloween candy and move straight to pumpkin pie and on to Christmas cookies.
I promise your jeans will thank you if you get rid of it! Don’t feel bad for your kids either because they don’t need the extra candy any more than you do.
What do you do with your leftover candy? I’d love to hear more creative ways and ideas drop a comment and share!
When I was working I would take the candy to work and put it in a basket to share with everyone.
This is a great idea! Thanks for sharing 🙂
